Lift Off!

At the very beginning of our theatre company’s process, we considered various ideas and concepts for the basis of our performance. Comedy, 1950’s Stepford wives and conspiracy theories were only a handful of suggestions that we felt drawn to. After a lot of research and a couple of company meetings, we decided to investigate different perceptions of the moon landing. We soon became fascinated with the idea of a child’s understanding of space and the imagination that could be associated with it. We decided to anchor the performance into the historical events that occurred within the space race, to generate a dynamic pattern between imagination and fact. The company agreed that the performance should entail moments of abstract movement and naturalistic acting. We agreed that physical theatre would enable us to the flip between the two, allowing us to construct strong theatrical images.

Alongside creating the ideas and structure for the performance, each member of the company had the opportunity to take on production roles. Upon taking the roles of a performer and one-half of the marketing team, it has been my responsibility to ensure that the promotion for the performance closely correlates with the artistic vision intended. After having decided that the performance will fall somewhere under the umbrella term ‘physical theatre’, it was suggested to keep all of the performers on the stage for the duration of the piece, enabling thorough and persistent ensemble work. As a result of this, we felt it would be best to form a marketing team consisting of two members to ensure we create a high consistency and standard of marketing produce for our company.
