Welcome to PinPoint Theatre!
A note from our directors..
Theatre is a form of escapism, and to Sam, so are the wonders of outer space. It was always our aim to create a show that explores historical events in a new light, and we were drawn to the history of the American space race. The idea of new and different perspectives was an integral part of our creative process, and paved the way for the creation of our 8 year old boy, Sam. A child’s perception of the world differs greatly from that of an adult, children experience life more vividly and intensely, unlike adults, children are experiencing different part of the world for the first time. This meant that a child’s perspective of a historical event seemed like the perfect fit. The naivety that comes from a child’s mind juxtaposed against the harsh realities of the real world allowed us to work stylistically to create a show where the lines between reality and imagination can begin to blur. We knew this story would need some kind of emotional depth and with that came the loss of a parent. The show has always been billed as a show about Sam but in the end it is a tale of a family trying to deal with death and the separation and breakdown of relationships that comes with it. The story, told through physical theatre mixed with stylistic interjections of dialogue in the form of Sam’s letters to his father, becomes one that has an inevitable outcome. The raw emotion fused into the letters read out by his mother served to highlight the inevitability that Sam was one way or another going to have to find out the truth about his father, and in turn with his mother, learn to accept and grow stronger from it.
The show is a reverent and sensitive exploration of a young boys journey using space as a metaphor, that uses physical theatre to touchingly show what words would fail to.
